Catalogue Notes

Variegated marble, used in screens or panels, was popular amongst scholars during the Ming and Qing dynasties for its evocative qualities of imaginary scenes, hence the term 'dreamstone' panels. These panels also known as 'stone paintings' were often made of marble quarried from Dali, Yunnan province.

Condition Report

Areas of significant, widened cracking to all three panels, associated with age and movement in the frame. Two intersecting horizontal cracks to a dreamstone plaque of one panel and a repaired vertical crack to two other plaques on the same panel. Possible repaired diagonal crack to the top corner of an upper plaque on one other panel, but this may be a natural fissure in the material.
