Auction Results – Important Jewels & Watches

IMPORTANT JEWELS & WATCHES 

Smith & Singer ended the year on a spectacular note with the final auction of 2022 achieving outstanding results for vendors of Important Jewels & Watches, with 84% of lots selling by volume to realise an auction total of $2,103,914, over 127% by value.  Large diamonds, coloured gemstones and pieces by international jewellery houses like Bulgari and Cartier and Australian brands like Paspaley performed exceptionally well.

Pieces from the most magnificent and comprehensive collection of jewels by the renowned Australian jewellery designer Canturi ever to be offered at auction, including Property from Melissa Louise Caddick (Receivers Appointed), Sydney, were highly sought-after with fierce competition in the room, on the telephone and over the internet.  All 47 pieces by Canturi offered sold, with the Property from Melissa Louise Caddick (Receivers Appointed), Sydney realising over 175% by value above the reserve prices.

Among the notable results were this stunning diamond ring (lot 63, estimate $320,000–340,000, pictured above), which sold for $392,727, and this spectacular 18ct gold, diamond and aquamarine ‘Labyrinth’ bracelet, Canturi, 2016 (lot 155, estimate $15,000–25,000, pictured below) which sold for $55,227.

PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF THE LATE MURRAY ROSE AM, SYDNEY 

Last night Smith & Singer’s final auction of 2022 began on a prestigious note, offering the four Olympic gold and four British Empire and Commonwealth Games gold medals won by swimming legend Murray Rose AM, between 1956 and 1962.  The collection represented the most significant sale of Olympic gold medals to be offered publicly at auction in Australia and all four Olympic gold medals sold on the night alongside one of the British Empire and Commonwealth Games medals, realising 135% by value.  

Two of the Olympic medals sold were this Games of the XVI Olympiad gold medal, Melbourne 1956 (lot 2, estimate $60,000–80,000, pictured above), which sold for $147,273, and this Games of the XVII Olympiad gold medal, Rome 1960 (lot 4, estimate $60,000–80,000, pictured below) which sold for $98,182.

A highlight of the collection is this stunning 18ct white gold, black sapphire and diamond ‘Stella’ necklace by Stefano Canturi for Canturi 2015, featuring over 150 carats of exceptional Australian black sapphires framed by sparkling diamonds to evoke the night sky (lot 156, estimate $80,000–120,000, pictured above).

Comprising a highly important collection of medals within the history and development of Australian sport, Smith & Singer are honoured to present, on behalf of the Rose Family, the four Olympic gold and four British Empire and Commonwealth Games gold medals won by swimming legend Murray Rose AM, between 1956 and 1962.  The collection represents the most significant sale of Olympic gold medals to be offered publicly at auction in Australia.  

Of the four Olympic gold medals on offer, one is the medal awarded to Murray Rose for winning the 400m men’s freestyle swimming final race held on 31 August 1960 as part of the Games of the XVII Olympiad in Rome ( lot 4, estimate $60,000 – 80,000, pictured above left).  Of the four British Empire and Commonwealth Games gold medals on offer, one is the medal awarded to Murray Rose for winning the 1650 yard men’s freestyle swimming final race held on 30 November 1962 as part of the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth ( lot 8, estimate $30,000 – 40,000, pictured above right).

The Sydney exhibition for the forthcoming Important Jewels & Watches auction will be open to the public from Friday 2 December to Tuesday 6 December, from 10 am – 5 pm, and on Wednesday 7 December from 10 am – 2 pm, at 30 Queen Street, Woollahra. 

Smith & Singer’s highly anticipated December auction will end the year on a spectacular note, featuring a dazzling array of diamonds, coloured diamonds and precious gemstones along with signed jewels by highly sought-after jewellery houses including Bulgari, Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, Buccellati, Graff, Cartier and Paspaley, complemented by jewelled watches by Rolex, Cartier and Patek Philippe.

Smith & Singer are honoured to present the most magnificent and comprehensive collection of jewels by Canturi ever to appear at auction, including Property from Melissa Louise Caddick (Receivers Appointed), Sydney. 

A highlight of the collection is this stunning 18ct gold, gem-set and diamond ‘Lucinda Colourburst’ necklace, Stefano Canturi for Canturi, 2015, a one of a kind necklace featuring over 228 carats of coloured gemstones (lot 143, estimate $60,000–80,000, pictured above).

The Lucinda Colourburst necklace is complemented by a pair of 18ct gold, gem-set and diamond ‘Cubism Colourburst’ earrings, Canturi, 2016 (lot 144, estimate $1,500–2,000, pictured above).
