NOTE This painting is signed, undated, but had to have been executed between 1852, when Terry came to New South Wales with his brother, Alexander and joined the gold diggers in the Hunter Valley, and 1862, when the painting was presented to Miss Alice Grant Gordon, a pupil at Miss Sarah Eliza Lester's Seminary for Young Ladies. Miss Lester's Seminary moved from Denham Court between July 1865 and January 1866 to Landsdowne House, corner Burton Street and Parramatta Road, Concord.
This watercolour's initial purpose was obviously that of a souvenir or keepsake to remind Alice Grant Gordon of her (hopefully) happy school days at Miss Lester's Seminary where she was a pupil for 12 years. It was a strange quirk of fate that 100 years later her granddaughter owned, not only the painting, but the house

PROVENANCE Presented to Miss Alice Grant Gordon, circa 1862, thence by descent via the family to her granddaughter, Miss Gown Flora Macdonald, who owned Denham Court from 1957 to 1974. Purchased by Dr. & Mrs Keith Okey
