in the form of a large mallet, the cover surmounted by a seated figure of Daikoku holding his mallet and the figure of Ebisu seated on the handle holding an abacus, a small boy standing to one side, the carving with details applied in mother of pearl

These are two of the seven gods of good luck. Ebisu is the god of merchants and so is depicted with his abacus.

Condition Report

A small plug on underside of cover where there is a fine hairline crack from the edge approx 1.5cm, a small chip to the back edge of the mallet held by Daikoku. The standing boy has the top of his pole missing. A crack over the left shoulder of Ebisu and down the front of his tunic to his waist with traces of glue around the neck where the head possibly repaired. A small chip to the Some fine vertical cracks on the sides of the box and over the rim.
