Francis Geary was the son of Admiral Sir Francis Geary born in 1752 and was sent to North America with the 16th Light Dragoons in 1776. As part of the British reconnaissance during the American Revolutionary War, Geary was ambushed at East Amwell, New Jersey and shot by local militiamen. His body was buried in the woods stripped of valuables and hastily covered up in a shallow grave.
