Louis Pisani was a nineteenth century picture dealer, retailing both originals and copies of Old Master paintings through galleries in Florence and Rome. The present work bears a plaque identifying the work as after Andrea Meldolla (1510-1563), known as Andrea Schiavone. While it has not been possible to trace the original of this composition, there is a Mary Magdalene by Marco del Moro (1536-1586) in the Pinacoteca, Lucca, which was formerly attributed to Schiavone.
