Archbishop Harrington Clare Lees was appointed Archbishop of Melbourne in 1920 until his untimely death in 1929. He was regarded as an affable man with a lively interest in diocesan activities, he was also a great speaker and it was noted that to gain a seat at Evensong one needed to arrive early to insure a seat, his speeches were full of 'fire and persuasion'. He was also a very fine administrator, one of his important achievements was the initiation of the successful appeal for the building of the St Paul's Spires in Melbourne, 1925
