Michael Ayrton 1921-1975, Christopher Hull Gallery, London, July 1987
During the 1940s Ayrton became interested in the occult, and specifically in the writings of the magician-mystic Aleister Crowley. The darkly foreboding, dream-like character of the present work reflects both this influence and a broader English tradition of mystery and magic going back to William Blake, Henry Fuseli and Richard Dadd.
