Catalogue Notes

Due to their scarcity, black opals are highly sought after, and are the most valued of all opal types. Nestled in Northern New South Wales, Lightning Ridge was first discovered to contain opal deposits in 1873, mining commenced in 1901. Lightning Ridge, whence this lot originated, is one of the few places in the world where the precious and highly prized black opal is found.
