Silk Panel Images - Condition Report

The four framed panels (each containing 3 circular silk images surrounded by a silk display support) are in generally sound condition consistent with the age, materials and techniques used by the artist. All panels display numerous minor losses to the silk image support, ranging in size from approximately 1 - 10 mm. All silk supports surrounding the circular images appear to be in good condition with only very minor discolouration. Also, each image displays minor discolouration and light stains which are most noticeable in the beige coloured background area of the image. However, certain individual images reveal larger areas of damage, as noted in the following description:

Panel A

In Panel A, the centre image has a large loss of approximately 10 cm, located in the top right area of the image (to the right of the flying birds). The losses in this area as with other areas of silk support loss, appear to have been infilled (possible with Japanese tissue infills) and in-painted to match the surrounding silk. This appears to be the case regarding all majors losses on all four panels.

Panel B

In Panel B there are noticeable losses to the silk image throughout, especially predominant in the top image, far left side. Within this area of loss there is also associated discolouration. The centre and bottom images contain similar losses with discolouration, to a lesser extent.

Panel C

In Panel C the centre image displays prominent losses in the far left side.

Panel D

In Panel D there is noticeable losses in the centre and bottom image on the left side.
