Smith & Singer are delighted to present a major solo exhibition of photographs by renowned Australian artist, Carol Jerrems. 

Carol Jerrems: Living in the 70s represents one of the most comprehensive and fully documented commercial exhibitions of the artist’s work ever held.  The eighteen works included in the show trace the extraordinary iconography of an artist, who in their brief but intense career, produced gritty and luminous images that continue to resonate and define.  Bookending a decade, these highly personal compositions include some of the most sensitive, revealing, forceful and compelling images of ‘living in the seventies’ in Australia.

In November 2019 Smith & Singer achieved a world auction record for an Australian photograph when a version of Vale Street (1975) (cat. no. 5) realised $122,000.  This represented a significant milestone in the art market for Australian photography and also publicly recognised and acknowledged the enduring legacy of Carol Jerrems within the history and development of Australian art.  In April 2025, Smith & Singer again established a world auction record with another version of Vale Street achieving $275,000.
