AKIO MAKIGAWA
Smith & Singer are honoured to present this remarkable exhibition of sculptures by Akio Makigawa.
Comprising fifteen significant works in marble and stainless steel, it is the most comprehensive commercial exhibition by the artist in more than two decades and honours the achievements of a visionary Australian artist. In the late 1980s, Makigawa became recognised as one of the nation's leading public sculptors, with major works commissioned for the Perth Cultural Centre (Gate II – Coalesce, 1987); Emery, Vincent and Associates, Melbourne (Garden of Desire, 1988); the Adelaide Station Environs (Elements and Being, 1989); and the Australian Embassy, Tokyo (Sun and Moon, 1990).
One of the great voices of Australian sculpture, Makigawa was a kind, generous and deeply cerebral man. His sculptures are inspired by, and created from, nature, and engender a sense of quiet contemplation and reflection about who we are and our place within the world.
Containing some of his most definitive forms, the present exhibition is a celebration of the artist’s legacy and has been created in unison with, and with the creative blessing of, the artist’s widow and internationally acclaimed artist Carlier Makigawa.
