A founding member of the legendary Melbourne artists' collective Roar Studios, David Larwill was a pioneer and leader of that generation of exuberant, larrikin neo-expressionist artists of the early 1980s.  Renowned for his paintings, Larwill was also a sculptor, exploring numerous facets of three dimensional forms and constructions.  In the last decade of his life, bronze captured his attention, and he pursued this medium with vigour.  There is tactility in Larwill’s sculptures; his works bare the gestural construct as he creates a form, almost injecting life into the hard cold innate bronze material.  Bird 2011 and Contemplating His Place in Humanity 2011 were both dedicated to his sons.  These sculptures appear adorable and inviting, but offer a steadfast resilience and a lasting legacy; a testament to an artist whose life was cut all too short.

David Larwill’s work is held in numerous major public collections, including those of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Parliament House, Canberra, and Artbank, as well as in many important corporate and private collections.  Sotheby’s Australia proudly represents the Estate of the Late David Larwill.
