The 1899 Melbourne Cup trophy could be yours but not the 1930 Phar Lap one

The Age | James Cockington
Given the billions of dollars invested on thoroughbred horseflesh each year, it seems puzzling that comparatively little value is given to racing memorabilia.
Even Melbourne Cup trophies more than a 100 years old are sold for apparently small amounts. For example, the 1899 trophy to be auctioned by Sotheby's Australia on April 6 has estimates of $60,000 to $80,000.
